ChatGPT could become the default assistant on AndroidJan 5, 2024
Google Assistant currently plays the role of default virtual assistant on all Android smartphones and tablets, but apparently the ChatGPT app could soon be proposed as a valid alternative, or at least this is what the most recent rumors suggest.
ChatGPT: Default assistant on Android
Going into more detail, a new activity in the latest version of the ChatGPT app identified by the Android Authority team, namely com.openai.voice.assistant.AssistantActivity, triggers the app to show an overlay that implies support for input vocal. It's very similar to Google Assistant, but the feature is currently not enabled by default and isn't even fully functional.
Further pieces of code in the app refer to the fact that the ChatGPT developers are working on allowing the app to be set as the default assistant, but the work is still in progress and there is still a long way to go before the goal can be achieved.
It is not clear when, exactly, ChatGPT will be able to be set as the default assistant on Android and above all it is not clear whether it will be a free option or whether it will be necessary to subscribe to the Plus subscription, but certainly more details will be available in the weeks to come .
Note that third-party assistants on Android are nothing new at all. In the past, Microsoft did the same with Cortona and Amazon offers its alternative with Alexa. When an app is set as the default assistant on Android, it can replace Google Assistant in long-press gestures for the Home or power button and in swipe gestures.
