Microsoft Edge: great news for PDF with latest updateMarch 20, 2023
Just three days after the release of Microsoft Edge 111 with Copilot , a useful tool for navigating online with the help of AI and advanced tools, the Redmond company makes an encore by releasing Edge version 111.0.1661.44 for all users, introducing a important change for the PDF experience within the stable browser.
Microsoft Edge now opens PDFs like Adobe Acrobat
The latest update for the US company's browser does not include other news or particular optimizations, much less fixes for bugs found by developers or users in these few days of availability of Microsoft Edge 111.
The only big news concerns the new criteria for the PDF experience , thanks to the collaboration between Microsoft and Adobe. The latter has therefore led, in recent months, to the implementation of the Adobe Acrobat PDF engine in the integrated PDF reader of Microsoft Edge.
From the official changelog we read the following:
“New Microsoft Edge PDF experience policy. As part of Adobe and Microsoft working to rethink the future workplace and your digital experiences, we are natively embedding the Adobe Acrobat PDF engine into Microsoft Edge's built-in PDF reader, with a planned release in March 2023. Administrators can begin testing the new Microsoft Edge PDF reader based on the Adobe Acrobat PDF engine by enabling the NewPDFReaderEnabled policy.”
The update, which is already available to everyone using Edge, will therefore allow system administrators to test the functionality using the NewPDFReaderEnabled policy. As you may have understood, Edge 111.0.1661.44 is a minor update compared to the previous version, known as 111.0.1661.41.
How to install the update
To download and install the update, simply open Microsoft Edge, go to the three-dot menu located at the top right, open the Settings and the "About Microsoft Edge" tab. At this point, the browser will automatically start the download and a simple restart will suffice at the end of the process to access the new feature.
